You know Michael Cudlitz as the tough guy with the distinct facial hair from a host of television shows and movies. Perhaps his most famous role was as Abraham Ford on “The Walking Dead.” The episode in which his character died was watched by more than 17 million people.
The 59-year-old Cudlitz began smoking cigars while filming “Band of Brothers” in which he played a cigar-chomping sergeant almost 23 years ago. The first ones—given to him by the prop department—were cheap, machine-made smokes. At a London cigar shop near where he was filming, he upgraded to handmade Cubans and fell in love with cigars then and there. “When you have your first epiphany cigar,” he says, “I think it takes you by surprise.”
He stuck with cigars, and while Hemingways are his favorite, he says “Rocky Patel A.L.R. is a close second, and Partagás Serie P No. 2 closing in.” He’s taken his interest in cigars to an even higher level—he’s an owner and partner in three Red Phone Booth cigar bars, in Nashville, Dallas and Buckhead, Georgia near Atlanta.
His latest project, portraying a particularly badass Lex Luthor in the series “Superman & Lois,” returns this year.
