Few names are as synonymous with the Modern Art period as Pablo Picasso. In tribute to the 50th anniversary of the Spanish artist’s passing, luxury accessories manufacturer S.T. Dupont is releasing a limited-edition Pablo Picasso collection headlined by two lighters and an array of accessories all depicting his famous 1962 work, “Portrait of Jacqueline in a Straw Hat.”
The connection between the French manufacturer and the heralded artist goes back several decades. According to S.T. Dupont, in the early ’60s Picasso used actual S.T. Dupont products to create new works of art. The artist even gifted his son and daughter-in-law two Dupont lighters that he embellished: one of which featured an engraved Harlequin, the other a Pierrot, both characters originating from the early form of Italian theater known as commedia dell’arte.
This isn’t the first time that S.T. Dupont has put some of Picasso’s art on its accessories. The French company first honored Picasso with a collection back in 1998, and in recent years, has revisited his works. In 2017, S.T. Dupont released the “Profil de Femme” collection featuring a popular Picasso piece from 1965, then continued in 2018 with the “Dove” collection, which depicted Picasso’s famous 1949 sketch of a dove, commonly referenced as a symbol for peace.
This year, S.T. Dupont looked to Picasso’s portrayal of his longtime companion, muse and eventual wife, Jacqueline Roque. One of his more renowned pieces, “Portrait of Jacqueline in a Straw Hat” is reproduced in miniature on the current collection.
The first lighter, part of S.T. Dupont’s vaunted Line 2 series (also referred to as Ligne 2), is made with a palladium base clad in white lacquer with a soft, adjustable double flame. It has a suggested retail price of $1,895. Its counterpart is less expensive and thinner, hence its name “Slimmy.” This chrome lighter, also finished in white lacquer, is a lightweight, easy-to-use torch that retails for $375. Both lighters have a reproduction of Picasso's signature on the back.
In addition to the lighters, the complete 2023 Picasso set includes multifunction pens, a key ring, cigar case, ashtray, iPhone case, white leather tote bag and a calfskin clutch bag, all featuring the famous painting. Only the lighters, however, are available in the U.S. Picasso devotees will have to go to France if they want the rest of the collection.
