The non-Cuban version of the Partagas brand has been around for decades, debuting on the U.S. market in 1977. Over the past 46 years Partagas cigars have come in many styles, but a new line called Valle Verde marks a first for the brand, as it’s rolled with a cover leaf from Mexico. The line’s name is Spanish for “Green Valley,” a growing region that borders the Gulf of Mexico and features a comparatively cool climate, lengthy rainy season and rich volcanic soil. Partagas Valle Verde ships to retailers July 1.
Rolled at the HATSA factory in Honduras, Valle Verde consists of a light-brown Mexican San Andrés wrapper atop a binder leaf from Cameroon. (Cameroon is the traditional wrapper found on the non-Cuban Partagas.) The filler blend consists of Nicaraguan leaves from Jalapa and Estelí, along with some Mexican San Andrés. According to Forged Cigar Co., which distributes the brand for parent Scandinavian Tobacco Group, the wrapper and fillers are from 2020 harvests, while the binder was cultivated in 2015.
The line will be available in three regular-production sizes: Robusto, measuring 5 inches by 50 ring gauge ($7.49); Toro, 6 by 52 ($8.49); and Double Corona, 7 1/2 by 54 ($9.49). A fourth size, Belicoso (6 1/2 by 52) will also be available as a limited-edition release and has a suggested retail price of $9.99. All sizes ship in green 20-count boxes, except for the Belicoso which ships in boxes of 10.
The number of boxes being produced for the Belicoso are not being disclosed.
